Hi Vonnie - I'm glad it can help - that's why it's here. Please do feel free to share it with others. No need to spend tons of money on an attorney or wonder if the contract you downloaded from the Internet is good - this one is.

Cool, I subscribed to the podcast via itunes and downloaded that interview. I've had it in my head for a long time that a coach that focuses on the mental performance of athletes could be a good cross over for business folks.

I agree 100% Rick. If you try to force the sale you'll send the person running. These things take time so we should act accordingly.

Key point is building relationships. If one attends a networking event with the idea of landing a client, or a gig, you are at risk of putting some folks off. Take an interest in them as an individual and then build from there.

Networking to get business boils down to a key principle I once heard: TALK ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS! Your business is only open when your MOUTH is open. If no one knows you do freelance, you won't get any work. Even before formal networking (online and offline), talk to friends, colleagues, and family, and let them know what kind of work you are seeking. Ask them to refer you when appropriate.

When I first started my freelance editorial business, my dad got me a client by finding out that someone at his church worked at a publisher. My mom later got me a client when she went to work for an educational company. My husband has gotten me clients by passing my name along when it was appropriate. And I've gotten lots of leads from colleagues and friends, many of which turned into paying work!

Once you can talk about your business, your networking will be more effective! And warm leads from friends, family, and colleagues, are a bit easier to convert to paying business, I've found.
