How To Sell Without Being A Jerk

And do it using the tools you already have…
Do you feel like you’re always chasing down the next project?
Do you want to know how to sell to more clients without having to result to sleezy sales techniques? Then read on.
When I first started my business I wanted the service that I provided to stand out so much that clients would flock to me in droves, paying me my desired hourly rate and allowing me to make a great living working for myself. While that’s a nice thought and highly altruistic, it didn’t happen. Not even close.
So, I turned to advertising.
My web development business grew because of two things: the first was the growing popularity of Ruby on Rails, and the second was Google AdWords. Ah ha! I had found a way to bring in business without selling. After all, once people were in the door, I would tell them how my company operated, how we billed, and how we managed projects. It was an easy “sell” as they were looking for a Rails firm to work with, and we were one of the first. Life was grand and my business grew to have 9 full-time employees.
Then the advertising stopped working…
There were two reasons for this: more companies started offering Rails development, and hosting companies with more money (like GoDaddy) started buying up the keywords. All of a sudden, my per-click cost went from $1 or $2 dollars to more than $30! And at the rate that people were clicking and not becoming customers, I could no longer afford it.
But still I resisted selling. And my business suffered. Until I learned how to sell with integrity and without being a spammy jerk.
You may have heard me talk about my long foray into Internet Marketing. Internet Marketing has gotten a bad name because of the people out there that use psychological tactics to trick you into purchasing their expensive products. What great examples! Yeah, not so much.
